Study findings may lead to ban where workers breathe secondhand smoke By Abby Gustus Assistant Campus Editor Some say beer and cigarettes go together like peanut butter and jelly, others disagree. Smoking is a controversial topic among students when it comes to those who smoke and those who do not. Smokers tend to believe that smoking in confined areas, such as restaurants and bars, affects only them. This is not the case, said Tammy Loew, the health advocacy coordinator for the Purdue Student Wellness Office. Loew will be presenting her findings from a study to both the Lafayette and West Lafayette City Council officials next Thursday. Loew is not trying to prevent people from smoking, but rather to protect those who work in conditions where secondhand smoke may cause health issues. In January 2005, Bloomington smokers will no longer be able to smoke in bars. Restaurants have already enacted the law, but bars were given a "little more time," said Loew. Now, it is up to city officials of West Lafayette and Lafayette to determine whether the smoke-free workplace ordinance is best for the two cities. With this, students are directly affected. Henry Levison, a junior in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, said it will be better when the law goes into effect. "I think people (smokers) should go outside," said Levison. "But if they said, ‘no drinking,’ like if it was something I loved, yeah, I’d be pissed." Rob Reuland, a junior in the School of Agriculture, said you cannot have one without the other. "Beer and cigarettes go together like peanut butter and jelly," said Reuland. Mayor Jan Mills said the city is only at the education stage. "We need the information and education in order to make an intelligent decision," said Mills. Loew is working to get this ordinance approved. She said people are working every day and are exposed to a cancer-causing agent. "Long-term exposure (to secondhand smoke) causes cancer," said Loew. In addition, she said that businesses do not lose money and it is an economically sound way for businesses to go. "First of all, people that provide health insurance, it improves health care costs because they go down. Also, their cleaning bill goes down and employees tend to be more productive, because they are not getting sick as often," said Loew. "Nine hundred to 1,600 people die annually from secondhand smoke; we are not stopping until this gets approved," said Loew. If it does get approved, Kyle Smith, a junior in the School of Management, said, "Nobody is going to stop going to the bars, so it really doesn’t matter."
