Rhodes the site of The Colossus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Did the Collossus really stand astride the Harbor entrance? I could not help but imagine the imposing giant keeping vigil over the Harbor. Sailing beneath his mighty legs must have been an incredible experience for the ancient mariners arriving at Rhodes. I've seen several artist's renderings and none measure up to my minds eye vision of this spectacle.
Despite our modern marvels, the ancients constructed things that still boggle the mind and beg questions as to how these incredible structures were realized without modern machinery. Perhaps one day we will know their secrets but for now we can only speculate on their means and wonder in awe at their genius.
