None of my family, nor any of my friends had any interest in going on an African Safari with me in February 1996. But it was something I wanted to do since I was a child and saw my first Tarzan movie. My expectations became more realistic as I got older. I also realized that if I was going to wait for someone to go with me, I might never get there. It was my time to go. I went. Now, I will be returning in July '99 with two people in tow.

Kenya was a dream come true for me. Even though I was travelling solo, I met some wonderful people and had the best time ever. Because I was travelling alone, I requested a custom tour, which I booked through Born Free Safaris who subcontracted to Kenya Wildlife Trails. I was met at the Nairobi Airport by a representative of Kenya Wildlife Trails who collected my bags while I exchanged some money for tips etc. We then drove into the city where we stopped by the KWT Offices.

I had read all the safety precautions about walking about in Nairobi. It is a big city congested by traffic and people walking and jaywalking everywhere. We parked across the street from their offices and as we proceeded to jaywalk across, my driver went on one side of a parked car and I opted for the other side. In a FLASH, my driver came back around to my side of the car and we crossed the street together. On that short walk, he was never more than two feet away from me. That started me thinking about those safety precautions again and how I would spend my free day in Nairobi.

The agent inside double checked all of my paperwork and vouchers to be sure all was in order. She too reminded me of some safety tips. I wear a gold chain around my neck that I haven't taken off in nearly twenty years. The top two buttons on my shirt were opened and she suggested that I fasten one to conceal that chain. I decided to hire a driver for the day and see Giraffe Manor, Karen Blixen's home etc.

There were guards armed with rifles on every floor of the 860 Hotel which made me uneasy at first, but they smiled and were friendly, so I got used to them. I had an early lunch, soaked in a hot tub for a bit and even got a short nap before my driver came for me.
