TANZANIA

TANZANIA

The fun began when Dick and I arrived at Kilimanjaro Airport outside Arusha, Tanzania. I was carrying both our passports, and
somehow, I did not have the Official Yellow-Fever Inoculation Certificates with them. I only had the yellow-colored information
sheet about the shots. After a 9 hour flight from Houston to Amsterdam, a 3 hour layover and on 8 hour flight to Arusha, we
were yanked out of line and sent to a private office in the back of the airport where glaring fluorescent lights bounced off of
cinderblock walls and into our bloodshot eyes. We were preparing for a "worst case scenario" like being sent back to the
States, but fortunately, the official in charge was very understanding. We obviously had the certificates at one time because we
needed them to get the valid VISA Stamps in our Passports. If they were going to give us a hard time, I wasn’t sure how to
bring up the matter of a bribe without causing bigger problems. As it turned out, the official was very gracious, found the pertinent information that he needed on the yellow-fever information sheet and stamped our
Passports approved for entry. It turned out to be a small matter, and settled quickly without bribes etc., but we were sweating it
out. We would be asked to show those certificates again when we entered Kenya a week later.
