Reference Books To Photographs, Illustrations and Art

**********************       **********************
  1. "Civil War in Pictures" ****
    History - by Fletcher Pratt.

This has original newspaper reports, sniped and 300 illustrations by artists of the time who were eyewitnesses and sometimes just by description. The author adds his own comments to the posted material. It is out of print but can be found, mine was a gift. This account jumps around and some of the info is outdated, but the illustrations make up for getting a copy. I did not count the amount of drawings, but the cover stated 300 and I can say I believe there are that many.

Hardcover; 256 total pages with text and Illustrations.
    Published in: 1955.
    Publisher: Garden City Books.
Cost: This runs between $7.00 & $25.00 or up, depending on the purchase.
    ISBN: None given.

  2.    New   "Cuyahoga County Soldiers and Sailors Monument" - a booklet *****
A complete description of the memorial structure. - by: Francis M. Van Etten.

A friend of mine, who grew up in Cleveland, went on vacation to New York. He stopped in Ohio and found this huge monument dedicated to the Union soldiers and sailors from Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Even though he lived there many years, he did not know it existed. It is beautiful in size and splendor. This booklet describes the history and the materials the monument is made from. The pictures are very nice.

The good people of Ohio, are restoring this monument & they say it will take three years to complete. The bronze statues are oxidized & green, but the restoration project will have them looking like new

Hardcover; 32 pages with pictures and drawings.
Published in: 1896, New York City - reprinted, 2001.
Publisher: The monument trustees, Cleveland Ohio.
Cost: Can only be picked up at the memorial site.
    ISBN: None found

A great book about the art produced during and about the Civil War.

Hardcover; 336 pages with paintings and drawings.

    ISBN: 0-517-58448-4

  4. "Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the Civil War" *****
    History - by: Alexander Gardner.

My copy has no date, but I do not think it is the 59 edition, but? it has an introduction by E.F. Bleiler-1958. No page numbers , but the last plate is numbered 100. Of course the 1866 editions are very rare and few remain. I picked this one up at the battle of Pilot Knob reenactment.

Soft Cover, rectangle shape, with lots of pictures and text accounting them,
    Published in: 1866, reprinted 1959 {probably many more}
    Publisher: Dover Press.

  5. "Russell's Civil War Photographs" *****
History - by: Andrew J. Russell

These are Captain Russell's photos during his time in the Civil War. Most notably, a picture of Lincoln's Funeral Car. If you like photos from the war, you will like this one, but it is different from Gardner's, mostly devastation pictures and locations.

    Soft Cover, 116 Historic Prints.

Reference Books To Civil War and Civilians

**********************       **********************

  1.    New   "Within The Plantation Household. Black And White Women of the South" ***
    History / Interpretation, - by Elizabeth Fox-Genovese.

This book is a very trying read. It does not spark the interest that the title would suggest. The author uses text to present her interpretation of a plantation household. At times, it seems right on, but there is a lot of dissecting the individuals and her understanding of their intent, in the content of correspondence.

One would be better off to read the individual subject's letters and diaries that are mentioned so that all of the written content can be seen to draw one's own conclusion. My wife picked this up for herself, but was bored before the first chapter was over. It does gets better I will say. The epilogue is enjoyable, but you might struggle with wanting to put it down. I started it, put it down, read a complete other book, picked it back up. Put it down, finished another book and finally completed this one.

Hardcover; 544 total pages with photographs.
    Published: 1988.
Publisher: the University of North Carolina Press.
Cost: $18.95. I picked mine up at the Ulysses S. Grant Gift Shop.
    ISBN: 0-8078-4232-X.

  2. "Divided Houses: Gender & The Civil War" **
History - Edited by Catherine Clinton & Nina Silber.

This was one of those books that uses essays by numerous authors to portray historic events in the views of those who edited the project. In other words, I liked a few of the articles, but questioned the majority. Always be suspicious of written words that profess to lump all scenarios of the War and claim that "This is the way it was". Not to spend to much on critiquing this, I'll just say, I didn't care too much for it.

Hardcover; 418 total pages with a few illustrations.
    Published: 1992.
    Publisher: Oxford University Press.
    Cost: Running between $15.00 & $20.00.
    ISBN: 0-19-507407-6.

  3. "Sarah Morgan: The Civil War Diary of a Southern Woman" *****
History / Autobiography / Women's studies - Edited by: Charles East.

This is an excellent account of a young girls life during the Civil War. Sarah is 19 when she starts writing her diary in 1862 and a double dose of tragedy hits her family right at the beginning of the account. I found that at first, I did not care for Sarah, but while I began to get more into the diary, you see all kinds of inner sides to this woman and my perspective changed. Sarah lived from 1842 - 1909.

Soft Cover; 626 total pages with photographs.
Published: My version is from 1991.
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster.
    Cost: $15.00.
    ISBN: 0-671-78503-6.

  4. "Confederate Women" *****
History - by: Bell Irvin Wiley.

This is a well written picture of certain female figures in the Confederacy, but is very short & barely scratches the surface. It will leave you wanting to know more.

Hardcover; 204 total pages with text and pictures.
Published: First released in 1975, mine is from 1994.
    Publisher: Barnes and Noble.
Cost: The original runs around $50.00, but this one is around $11.00, mine was a gift from the wife.
    ISBN: 1-56619-378-8.

  5. "The Civil War, A History." ****
    History - by: Harry Hansen.

When you start out to write and cover such a big topic, you will miss many things. Mr. Hansen covered the major events, but sometimes stated incidents as fact, that are still not agreed upon, while at other times, mentioning certain occurrences and stating that they may have happened differently. Overall a good book and an easy read. Sometimes the reader will get bogged down with all the names, dates and statistics he throws out.

Soft Cover; 663 total pages., text and a few maps
Published in: 1961, my copy is from 1991.
    Publisher: Penguin Group.
Cost: It runs around $6.00, but I picked mine up for $3.50 at a book fair.
    ISBN: 0-451-62840-3.

  6. "Desperate Women" *****
History - by: James D. Horan.

The first 168 pages deal with four women from the Civil War period. (Rose Greenhow, Belle Boyd, Pauline Cushman & Miss Van Lew) The rest, covers women of the old west. This is a great read and worth finding! I could not put it down. I can truly recommend this one.

Hardcover; 336 total pages with great photographs.
    Published in: 1952.
    Publisher: Bonanza Books.
Cost: My wife picked it up at a yard sale for a nickel! (one of the best places to get these treasures) From cruising the web, the book ranges in price, generally around $25.00.
ISBN: There was no ISBN number, but there was a number listed on the back, 110261.

  7. "An Introduction to Civil War Civilians" *****
    History - by: Juanita Leisch

A lot of information squeezed into a small book. It is not directed at Missouri, but describes civilian life in the nation as a whole during this period.

Soft Cover; 86 pages with rarely seen photographs.
    Published in: 1994
    Publisher: Thomas Publications
    Cost: $7.95.
    ISBN: 0-939631-70-9

  8. "The Man Who Tried To burn New York" *****
    History - by: Nat Brandt

This is the story of Robert Cobb Kennedy and the planned burning of New York in retaliation for Sheridan's ravaging of the Shenandoah Valley and Sherman's devastating sweep of Atlanta. A very good read!

    Paperback. 286 pages
    Published in: 1986, reprinted 1990,
    Publisher: Berkley books
    Cost: $3.95.
    ISBN : 0-425-11918-1

Reference Books To African and Native Americans and The Civil War

**********************       **********************
  1.    New   "Captured By The Indians, 15 Firsthand Accounts, 1750-1870." *****
Historical Study, - Edited by Frederick Drimmer.

This one I highly recommend! I mention the book here, because the last two cases cover the time line of the war. Revolt of The Sioux, the account by Lavina Eastlick & Ho for Idaho, the account of Fanny Kelly. Both are written in their own words. Plus, the entire book really is worth reading, it is a well put together collection.

Hardcover: 378 total pages with nice notes
    Published: 1985
Publisher: Dover. Origianlly this book was first published in 1961, under the title; Scalps & Tomahawks: Narratives Of Indian Captivity.(Coward-McCann, Inc.)
Cost: My wife gave me mine after picking it up years ago at Silver Dollar City for $7.95.
    ISBN: 0-486-24901-8

  2. "American Negro Slavery" *****
Historical Study, - by Ulrich Bonnell Phillips, Ph. D.

This book leaves out perspectives from the slaves side of the coin & will be viewed as racist by many. At the time of publication, it was the leading book of the subject. I give it high marks, because it brings out information that is overlooked by most studies & I think it should be read, to ascertain a perspective of the educational thinking on the subject, from the period it was written. It is slanted towards the slave owner but still was an interesting read. Phillips brings some subjects up that others deny to this day. It is a shame that he did not interview actual slaves, who were still alive at the time. If he would have, the content would have been different, or at least, more balanced.

    Hardcover; 529 total pages.
Published: 1918, my copy is from 1929.
    Publisher: D. Appleton And Company.
Cost: This one is out of print, but I have seen it offered for $99.00 on the web for a hardcover copy, less for paperback. I picked mine up at a library book sale for 10 cents!!
    ISBN: ----

  3. "The Problem of Slavery in Western Culture" *****
History / Slavery, - by David Brion Davis.

A well written and comprehensive study on the causes of slavery. The author touches upon the advancement and beginnings of emancipation. There is no central theme, it jumps around and covers huge amounts of case studies of individuals who supported or opposed slavery. Boring to some, but others will enjoy it. Davis only touches the historical time frame surrounding the Civil War, but I give it high marks, because it is a very well researched book. I believe everyone should be required to read this book in school. Davis won the Pulitzer in literacy in 1967 for writing this book.

    Hardcover; 505 total pages.
    Published: 1966.
    Publisher: Cornell University Press.
Cost: Looking on the web, I see it is reprinted and runs around $18.00. I picked mine up at the Ulysses S. Grant Gift Shop.
    ISBN: 0-1950-5639-6.
Library of Congress Catalog Number: 66-14348.

  4. "The American Indian in the Civil war, 1862-1865" *****
History - by: Annie Heloise Abel. Introduction by Theda Perdue and Michael D. Green.

              Excellent book!

Paperback. 403 pages, 1 picture and 1 map.
    Published in: 1919, reprinted 1992,
    Publisher: Bison books
    Cost: $12.95.
    ISBN : 0-8032-5919-0
